Scoliosis is a common condition where the spine twists and curves to the side. It can affect people of any age, from babies to adults, but it mainly starts in children aged 10-15 – particularly girls.
It can be caused by abnormally shaped bones of the spine, underlying neurological or muscular disorders and wear and tear on the spine with age. However MOST commonly it’s cause is unknown; this is called Idiopathic Scoliosis.
The main signs and symptoms include:
– Visibly curved spine
– Leaning to one side
– Uneven shoulders
– Protruding ribs
– Clothes not fitting well
– Back pain
If any of those symptoms sound familiar – Don’t panic!
Most people are able to live completely normal lives and can do most activities including exercise and sport. In fact, exercise is an excellent and highly effective and recommendable way of managing spinal curvature. It is proven to increase muscle strength and decrease back pain and discomfort.
Another proven and effective method of managing or correcting scoliosis is Osteopathy.
Osteopaths will address:
– Posture – management of school bags and sitting positions in children is particularly important.
– Breathing Patterns – altered cavity pressures can affect the breathing mechanics and exacerbate scoliotic patterns.
-Muscular discomfort – using osteopathic techniques, massage, manipulation etc.
If you feel that you, or somebody you know, may be affected by Scoliosis and would benefit from advice and management then please do not hesitate to contact the clinic for a no-obligation conversation on how Osteopathy can help you!
